norland college, hayesfield campus

founded in 1892 by emily ward, norland was the first college to offer any kind of childcare training and was founded on the principles of froebel (the originator of the ‘kindergarten system’). along originally located in norland square, sondon, the college arrived in bath via hungerford in wiltshire.

the project to significantly extend, adapt and refurbish an existing five storey victorian bath villa includes 8 lecture rooms, 4 seminar rooms, lecture hall, library, a basement level for student welfare and breakout garden space, staff recreation and administrative support areas. A bespoke cookery school interpreted and repurposed an existing outbuilding. we feel that the resultant scheme has sympathetically imagined its place in context, with exciting additions that showcase this prestigious university.
